Seminar On Arbitration-settling Business Disputes Out Of Court Bernama, 21 April 2004

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) as the national Secretariat of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Malaysia is organising a one-day seminar on "Arbitration-Settling Business Disputes out of Court", this May 10.

The event, to be held at Wisma FMM here, would be officiated by the secretary general of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Ab Razak Ramli.

In a statement Wednesday, FMM said that as business disputes could arise at any time, it was important to identify the potential areas of dispute and to identify in advance a method, or a combination of methods, preventing or settling any dispute.

Arbitration is defined as the process of having a dispute settled by a person or group not involved in the dispute.

FMM said that international commercial arbitration was gaining worldwide acceptance as the normal means of resolving international business or commercial disputes.

The seminar is aimed at enhancing participants' knowledge of the key elements of what is and why arbitration.

It is also aimed at creating greater awareness for Malaysian exporters, importers and the business community on international commercial arbitration and on the importance of ensuring arbitration as an option in commercial/business contracts as a means of resolving business disputes.

FMM said the seminar also aimed to provide participants the opportunity to seek clarification on their legal concerns pertaining to disputes which may arise from their business contracts.
